Gmat is all about understanding exactly what they are asking for.  Gmat likes to confuse you, but this is actually a really easy question.

The given is x+y=8z

To get the average of x,y,z, you would:

(x+y+z) / 3

Now all you gotta do is replace x+y with the given (8z):

(8z + z) / 3 =

(9z) / 3 =  3z

I believe I was over thinking this question and I allowed Gmat to confuse me.</description>
